Finley a town that boasts a friendly laidback lifestyle and
atmosphere, typical of Australian outback rural towns. Well worth a
visit and taking time out to experience the way the locals go about
their day to day living.
The town of Finley is an important
centre for the rice industry. Also, the sale yards at Finley are
nationally acclaimed, operated by Finley Associated Stock and
Station Agents, and draw buyers intrastate and interstate.
Take the opportunity on a Friday morning to experience the
buzz of buyers bidding through the computerised system.
The
development of this area as a thriving farming community has made
farmers aware of the importance of water and the environment.
They Have been actively involved in the Fuller Land Care
Project, which was the first project of its kind to monitor the
effects of agriculture on the environment.
The man-made lake
at Finley provides a great spot for a picnic, sailing, water-skiing
and fishing. Relax in the sun while the children go wind surfing or
canoeing on the lake. The new roller/skate board rink is sure to be
popular with the younger generation.
Finley is only 3 1/2
hours from Melbourne and 7 1/2 from Sydney. Much less from many
other regional centre and it offers many attractions to the visitor
who may stop for one day, or longer. The craft and giftshops plus
the Art Gallery are just a few of these to discover.
The Art
Gallery specialises in providing regular high quality exhibitions of
all mediums. The Opening hours are from 10:30am to 4:00pm on
Thursday to Monday. The Finley Rode and Country Music Festival held
during the summer festive season are major attractions for visitors.
The friendly folk at Finley are very happy to spend time to
share the local stories. Visit the Historical Museum, Log Cabin and
see the machine collection and the church. The Museum is located at
the Mary Lawson Wayside Rest at the southern end, fringing the
Newell Highway. |

Did you know?
The Close family have been running a foundry and engineering
business, in Finley, on the same site in Wollamai St. for 107 year.
Mr JT Close employed his foundry workers (at quiet times) to build
other existing edifices, eg. Presbyterian Church, crn. Wollamai and
Denison St., the older portion of St Marys Cathlic Church, crn, of
Denison St. and Riverina Hwy, the Ambulance station, 82 Wollamai St
and private residence at 93 Wollamai St and 31 Denison St.
In 1962 long before irrigation, 420,000 bags (35,000 tonnes)
of wheat were delivered to Findley Railway siding, which at the
tinme set a Commonwealth record, for a single station. |
